Hi angel bbys, how are you? I’m okay, thanks for asking.
I’ve been thinking, and since it’s the holiday season, I thought I would ask you to help out the needy, and by needy, I mean me. I need your validation. So please, for the love of Aphrodite, share this newsletter with one of your friends or sugar daddies, whatever. Tell your Twitter followers how much of a fun time I am. Thanks. LYLAS.
Please never talk about that sign of weakness ever again, thank you. Let’s talk fashion!!!
This past Tuesday, Louis Vuitton showed its SS22 men’s collection, but it was so much more than just a fashion show. It was a dedication, it was a celebration, it was a memorial service. I know I haven’t been writing this newsletter long enough for you to hear my full opinions on Virgil’s work, but I’ll admit, I didn’t always say the best things about it, however when something was good, when something changed the fashion framework, I acknowledged it. This collection was a re-showing of a previous collection, with the inclusion of new ones, and I can’t promise you that part of my opinion isn’t skewed by the fact that I am missing Virgil, but I really enjoyed this show. I know it wasn’t 100% new, but I felt like I was running through a timeline. The chess piece inspiration was subtle, but there. I loved the martial arts padded moments, the rave moments, a lovely scalloped coat, some yummy leathers. It kept me on my toes. He brought in elements of Black and Asian culture and continued to show that representation matters and continued to make people aware of where a lot of fashion’s favorite trends come from. A lot of my opinions are probably the same as they were in June, but I might have softened a bit. One thing is for sure, even without the three story sculpture, Virgil’s presence would have been there.
Harris Reed launched Fluid Basics, a loungewear line filled with gender-fluid wardrobe staples. I’m here for it. Not only does this venture not feel forced, but it’s also not as lazy as most collections that call themselves gender-fluid. Although, they are simple pieces, they still feel like Harris Reed, which is exciting for those who are fans of the designer but can’t exactly get their hands on a demi couture piece. Inspired by vintage corsets and ruching, the label placements are interesting, and the suited loungewear feel like something Harris would both design and wear themselves. I’m super excited to see the initial collection and what’s to come from it!
GCDS collabed with Bratz and I’m… obsessed? The brand styled two Bratz (Sasha and Yazmin) and created a genderless capsule collection. The actual loungewear isn’t that interesting to me, but the dolls are really living their best lives. Considering the drive behind GCDS, I like this partnership, and what better dolls to have a fashion collab than Bratz? I can’t be the only one that has drawn fashion inspiration from them in the past.
- Jacob Elrodi for Esquire; Could I say this isn’t anything crazy? Yeah, I could, but it’s also giving camping chic. I think this shoot is styled well, I love all the color ways of the looks, and I really wish those quilted Ankvas trousers had more of a moment because I would also go camping (I would never go camping) if it meant owning those. Honorable mention to the delish Fendi sweater and the amazing Missoni balaclava. Styled by Alison Edmond.
- Emma Chamberlain for Tmrw; Emma said horse girls deserve rights!!! I really enjoyed this. It was the George Trochopoulos look that did it for me, but the Patou moment was a close second. I’m not trying to imply that all these brands are “small”, but it’s nice not seeing the immediate fashion house choices being used when it comes to styling Emma. I know she’s a Louis Vuitton girl, unfortunately, so it’s nice to see her wearing brands that the cool, fashion, Instagram girlies probably know and will gag over. It’s on brand. Styled by Jared Ellner.
- Hunter Schafer for Harper’s Bazaar; The only reason I really liked this was because I really like Hunter Schafer. The styling choices weren’t my favorite. They were a little boring and I didn’t understand the story here. Loved the Proenza Schouler coat and Courrèges boots moment, and the sequin Prada cardigan looked lovely on the cover, but it didn’t really get its time to shine. Styled by Stella Greenspan.
- Dakota Johnson for Town & Country; Dakota Johnson is typically pretty understated when it comes to the way she dresses, but I do enjoy Gucci for Dakota. I would love to see more of that. The star of this shoot has to be the Christopher John Rogers dress though, I MEANNN!!! The colors are insane, and I like how the circles in the background tie into the circles in the dress. Other than that, it wasn’t anything crazy. I’m honestly just happy that Kate Young doesn’t seem to hate Dakota as much as she hates other people she styles. Styled by Kate Young.
- Bad Bunny for Highsnobiety; I honestly enjoyed the dressed down feel of these looks. Definitely haven’t seen that Gucci suit styled the way it is here until now. The Willy Chavarria moment is IT!!! I’m also very much here for the chaps and the Prada onesie. Styled by Corey Stokes.
Zendaya started my week on a high note, wearing a recreation of this Roberto Cavalli gold spine dress. It’s giving Doc Ock. Zendaya also wore a stunning green and purple Valentino suit that was reminiscent of the Green Goblin. This is something called “method dressing” in which someone is styled in a way that reflects the character they are playing. Y’all know Law Roach loves a reference and always does the damn thing.
Tessa Thompson wore Bach Mai at the Gotham Awards, and I really loved it. I thought the drop waist was lovely and I think the shoes and gloves go together well. I think the fit is great, and I don’t mind the high-low. This look was styled with boots in the lookbook, but I actually prefer the way Tessa wore it.
Dakota Johnson in a simple, black Schiaparelli gown… and it’s gorgeous. Elsa Schiaparelli was all about a black gown, and quirky additional elements; like the golden halter with the pair of lips. I think Daniel Roseberry does really well in channeling her, while adding his own touch. It fits her perfectly, and if you’re going to do simple, make sure it’s perfect. The shoes, not my fave. Could have been some fun Schiaparelli shoes, or just a closed toe.
The love of my life, Kristen Stewart, was NOT in Chanel recently, and that is enough to please me, apparently. This dress is an amazing color and fits her so well. I’m not sure what’s happening in the center, but honestly, I’ll take anything that isn’t a disappointing Chanel look.
I really need to have a conversation with whoever is dressing Rachel Zegler. She doesn’t deserve this. Honestly, if you told me the Dior dress was Christian Siriano, I wouldn’t be entirely surprised. Even though there’s polkadots on the top, it still feels like two completely different pieces coming together, and it just doesn’t fit that well. Then we got a green Ralph Lauren sweater dress that was boring and also ruined by an unnecessary belt. I also wish the shoes had been green as well.
Rihanna in a leather Bottega Veneta look was everything. I thought this color looked stunning on her and I love how it wraps around the neck.
Sandra Bullock wore this unfortunate jumpsuit from Stella McCartney and made it even worse by adding a blazer.
A lot of people didn’t like this look from Rooney Mara, but I think she looks lovely. It’s definitely very her. I would have loved to see more of the bust, but at the same time, I think the lace is so beautiful and feminine, while the blazer adds a dichotomy to the look by adding a masculine touch. I don’t think the heavier lace on the bottom and lighter lace on top ruin the look, and I honestly enjoy the tiny frill where the two pieces meet.
Cardi B wore a Prada look that was altered by Matthew Reisman. He took a Prada skirt and turned it into this mini dress. Listen, it’s not an entirely groundbreaking dress, but I wouldn’t be able to do this for shit, and I think it’s fitting for a Playboy event. Let’s be real, it’s the necklace we’re all looking at. If you look closely, I do feel like the lining underneath isn’t entirely even at the bottom.
Olivia Rodrigo representing bowtie pasta!!! I really do not like this bow in the front, with the fishnet top and visible straps underneath. Olivia has yet to really blow me away with an outfit, and I just feel like there’s so many fun, young, Y2K designers that she could be working with to match the aesthetic of her videos and performances.
Lil Nas X really took me on a journey this week. First we got something that James Charles would probably wear to Coachella and I don’t know what was happening there. Things got a tad better with a Balmain moment. I like the idea of Balmain for Lil Nas. This was simple, but I enjoyed the tank underneath. The suit was fine, it had a subtle print that added some texture, however part of me would have liked to see this sans blazer. The necklace felt a bit heavy for it. The Tom Ford look shocked me, because I didn’t love this collection, however I really enjoyed this look! I loved the green. While I don’t even really mind it being tied in the front, I do wish it was just buttoned at the bottom instead. I think the jacket and glasses are fun, and it’s Tom Ford so obviously it fits great.
I wasn’t going to talk about this, but this is the second time I’m seeing this kind of D*lce look. The little dangly embellishments remind me of Marshall Columbia except done poorly. There’s a lot of other white suits from other designers that Machine Gun Kelly could have chosen from. Don’t know if wearing a shitty look from a shitty brand was worth it.
Okay. Look. I like this Mugler look, I do. However, I’m not understanding why that black addition underneath couldn’t have been nude. This choice takes away from the illusion, the print, and all the wrapping for me.
Loved Gabrielle Union in CJR. I’m all for a clashing pattern, and I’m all for this look. The top has that same motif we saw earlier in Dakota Johnson’s cover shoot, and I love how the black suit has different colored stitching. It’s so much fun.
Riz Ahmed in Prada. Absolutely. Sorry can’t discuss, too busy looking. Simple done well.
Listen, I’m all here for a bumster moment, however when I’m lounging at home I’m not too fond of a breeze in my butthole. Rihanna, why are you like this. You know you’re the only one that can get away with this.
Another brand I don’t like bringing attention to, but at this point I’m wondering if I have to write another newsletter about this shit. I’ve been seeing more and more Dolce & Gabbana and Alexander Wang lately. Am I missing something? Are we just forgiving all the horrid things they did and will probably continue to do? Whoever Lucy Liu’s management is, she needs to change it, because there’s no reason she should be the face of a new Wang campaign.
So those were all of my thoughts of the week. Are you sick of me giving my unsolicited opinion? I’m not! Talk next week!
