Another awards show, another boring red carpet.
Okay fine, there were some good looks, but she’s(me) is always a little bit underwhelmed.
I want Simone Rocha to kiss me on the mouth. Anyways, I think this custom look is lovely! I love the color scheme, the flowers, and the curved details at the waist. It’s also nice to see brands doing custom pieces for someone that isn’t a sample size. I’ve mentioned this before, but I really like when a designer ties their collection into their custom pieces.
This feels like one of those picture tests that’s like, “What do you see first? A seahorse or a question mark?”
This color is lovely, this dress is not. Although it wasn’t my favorite, it did look a little bit better on the runway. I feel like it just looks too big. It needs to be less slouchy and relaxed.
The hottest peeled banana I ever did see. No, but really, I think she looks gorg, and I’m shocked this is Dior. Anya mentioned that this was her design brought to life, so may-haps that is why it’s not ugly. The low back with diamonds hanging down looked lovely, and I’m here for the yellow cape. One thing I will say is the fabric should have been a bit stiffer. This is a little too flimsy, and although not noticeable here, I’ve seen it lift and bunch around the chest.
This look is from the Spring 2022 Brandon Maxwell collection, aka one of his most interesting collections. Honestly, I think this metallic fabric, and pleating on top is really nice. I don’t like the belt that much and I feel like this is a bit more of a daytime look, but she looks nice!
I’m underwhelmed. I love Billy for always going for it, but this just isn’t it for me. The interesting part of the sleeve isn’t even part of the sleeve. it’s like he just slipped on a pair of wings on top.
This is not that bad! I don’t mind the asymmetrical drape and I think this color is really nice and looks lovely on her. Part of me is thinking that she’s trying to distance herself from her Schitt’s Creek character since the show has come to an end, and this look definitely does that.
This was almost great for me. I love the feathered mermaid train and the color way, BUT I don’t love that I can clearly see where the feathers and the white part of the dress meet. Also looks like MGC convinced Nicolas that tiny belts are a good thing.
Sure, this is a simple look, but I think the Mandarin collar and velvet patches add a little bit of interest to this all black look.
So, I do really love this look and this color is stunning, however I wish Dan had worn the jacket open. I think it would have made this look less clunky. I also think carrying the monochrome all the way down to the shoe would have been nice.
Yes, this is simple, but The Row is simple luxury. It’s never insane, so this caftan moment feels very true to the brand. I like that it cinches at the waist and then delicately flares out. Also! If you’re not aware, The Row is Mary-Kate and Ashely Olsen’s brand so it’s cute to see Elizabeth wearing her sister’s designs.
There’s something about this that I actually really like. It’s simple but it’s nicely tailored and I think the diamond detail adds dimension and some figure accentuation.
This is confusing to me because I it’s Valentino, but I thought it was Gucci or Rodarte. I’m not too crazy about the top or the nude lining underneath, but there’s something about the bottom of the skirt that looks like stained glass and it’s lovely.
Emma looks like a chic stick of butter, and while I can see why this might not be everyone’s cup of tea, I’m obsessed with it. I love this muted yellow, and the bonnet feels v Scandinavian. The gloves could have been a little bit tighter and better fitted, but I’m here for it.
Okayyyyy, this is good? The textiles and craftsmanship behind this are lovely, and it feels very boho, very Chloé. The fabric reminds me of a canvas and I feel like I’m looking at an abstract art piece.
I do really love this dress and all the tiny crystals and latticework and how it frays at the bottom, BUT that dark bodysuit underneath in a nude would have been better me thinks.
It’s simple, but I like it! I think the velvet is lovely, the color is nice, and the fit is great. Love a little heeled boot moment. Also, I would die for Ted Lasso.
So, while I don’t love this gown, I do appreciate one thing about it. It’s recreating a look Jean’s character wears in the show she was nominated for, and that I can respect.
Alright Christian, this isn’t awful. There, I said it. It’s simple, but at least it’s not something insane, trying to be something amazing.
A Loewe boy in his Loewe suit. Yes, it’s a simple black suit, but it’s got character y’all. The extended, fold-over lapels, the little tail in the back, the floral bowtie. All small details, but they add something special. I also think this is a great example of bringing in design elements from an older time period while still staying modern.
It’s gonna be a no for me. The wrap skirt looks like you just took a table cloth and added a safety pin to one of the corners, and the one-sleeve off the shoulder thing is strange.
I don’t hate this Dior look either? I feel like I’m looking at some really pretty wedding stationary and I can’t be mad at it. Also s/o MGC for cinching a waist without a belt. I know that couldn’t have been easy for you, but I’m proud.
Kathryn bby, who did this to you? That belt is terrible. Not only could it have been a top all on its own, but what is it even doing for the waist? Nothing. The answer is nothing. The pants also feel a little on the short side, and I’m not understanding the shoe.
This would have been a very simple, lovely, silk dress without the corset. That corset feels out of place, and makes the fabric above it look like it’s pooling too much.
I’m here for this! Simple black suit, but I love the embellishments and I think the larger shirt collar is nice. The detailing of the shirt underneath is a little blown out here, but it has some pretty detailing, and I don’t mind the flared pant. Also from what I can see, cute boot and cute necklace! If you must know, I am in fact seeing Leon Bridge’s in concert on Monday and she’s v excited.
Listen, it’s nice, okay. I’ll say it’s nice. But it is Dolce, and I just feel like you can get something just as nice, if not better, from a different designer.
This is so hot and reminds me of the old Tom Ford when he was really giving sex. I love the bronze and cobalt together.
This look is from the most recent, Spring 2022, collection and it reminds me of a lobster, but in a good way. Something about this dress made me like it when I saw it on the runway. It’s nothing crazy, but not bad.
This is simple, but I feel like the color does all of the talking, and if anyone knows how to work with color it’s CJR. It’s a lovely way to show that fun colors and non-traditional silhouettes can also be classy.
Two for two, Christian. She looks beautiful, and this color is lovely. We all know tulle has been done before countless times, but this is really nice. My only thing is that I can see the back lining of the scrunched tulle at the bottom through the sheerness.
This is nothing special, but the coral and navy do work really well together. I like the cut of the top, and this is honestly not that bad compared to some of the looks Olivia Coleman has worn in the past.
Also from the most recent Carolina Herrera collection, but isn’t it giving Valentino? I’m not mad at it, but I’m also not impressed.
I have looked at this so many times and I still don’t know how I feel about it. Seth looks like a sweet potato pie, but I don’t know if that’s a good or bad thing. There’s something not right. The black shoe? The pasty shirt underneath maybe? The creases perhaps?
Yeah, no. Just a sequined dress with a weird flower thing at the hip.
Again, it’s not a good Valentino look for me. I love Valentino and this v classic Valentino color and the endless crystals, but there’s something about this looseness that is not hitting.
Did anyone else immediately thing of Evelyn Hugo when you saw this dress? Anyways, I like this classic 1940s-50s Christian Dior silhouette, however that asymmetrical shoulder is not good, and of course, the dumb belt. The brown shoe could have been a different color as well. I love the necklace, but I think the earrings could have been more delicate.
So that was the Emmy’s red carpet. Very lukewarm. My best dressed would have to be Anya Taylor-Joy, and worst, probably Kathryn Hahn (srry love you).
See you next time, probs with the London Fashion Week newsletter. Don’t know if I’ll finish typing that one out before the weekly roundup, BUT I think I can, so tootles.
